Hybrid sales are booming in the US. In his latest earnings report, the company blamed demand for hybrid vehicles for depressing global EV sales. "We believe this is not the right strategy, and electric vehicles will ultimately dominate the market," he added. "A lot of hybrid electric vehicles now are not far off from their internal combustion engine alternatives. "What we've seen historically is that when gas prices rise, hybrid electric vehicle price or acquisitions rise as well," he told BI.

New York CNN —Ford is recalling more than 450,000 compact SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States because they might lose drive power resulting from a battery issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an alert. The models affected include Ford Bronco Sport SUVs made between 2021 to 2024 and the Ford Maverick pickups made between 2022 to 2023, specifically totaling 456,565 units. The NHTSA said that Ford discovered that an undetected low battery charge could result in a “loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights, or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.”“We are committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our customers,” Ford said in a statement to CNN. Customers can also use Ford’s mobile service and pick-up and delivery for a fix. Notification letters will be mailed by May 13 and owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

DETROIT – Ford Motor started the year with a slight increase in sales, as a large jump in hybrid vehicles offset an 11% decline in all-electric cars and trucks. The Detroit automaker on Friday reported sales rose 4.3% last month from January 2023, led by a 43% jump in hybrid sales and 2.6% uptick in traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Despite the focus on hybrids, 90% of Ford's sales last month were traditional cars and trucks. Ford's stock has fallen about 1% in 2024.

Hybrids "make a ton of money," Jim Cramer said Monday after Ford reported a 75% year-over-year surge in hybrid sales in November to roughly 12,100 vehicles. "Ford should be spewing capital right now," because hybrid vehicles are more profitable than EVs, Jim added. He also suggested that given the new sales numbers Ford could be in better shape than its stock indicates. Perhaps keeping a lid on gains was the 6.5% drop reported in legacy internal combustion engine vehicle (ICE) sales to nearly 124,500 units. Maverick and F-150 trucks drove a 40% increase in hybrid sales in the third quarter, the three months ended in September.

CNN —The first production Tesla Cybertruck is expected to be delivered today – finally – four years after it was first unveiled. Stellantis’s Ram 1500 Rev electric truck will also go into production in late 2024. The Cybertruck is less than 19 feet long, according to Tesla, which is slightly shorter than other full-size trucks. Ample functional front space has been a big selling point for the Ford truck, in particular. That truck is claimed to provide up to 14,000 pounds of towing, the same figure Tesla originally claimed at the Cybertruck’s unveiling.

The bare-bones Maverick XL hybrid lacks creature comforts like cruise control and power mirrors. The first time I hopped into the new Ford Maverick pickup, I did what any driver would do in an unfamiliar vehicle. The base Maverick XL, which Ford loaned me for a weekend in December, costs $20,000 before fees, which makes it the cheapest model in Ford's lineup. Ford Maverick XLT ($22,360) : adds cruise control, a nicer interior, power mirrors, an in-bed storage cubby, and other features. During my time with the Maverick XL, I debated whether the stripped-down truck would be worth the sacrifices I'd have to make.

Gas price outlook for 2023When you venture out during the summer travel season, expect gas prices to remain steady through September—mostly due to overseas economic pressures. “When per-barrel prices go up, gas prices go up. By that time, the EIA estimates gas prices will drop to roughly $3.09 per gallon—a near-50-cent price break from today’s prices. Other factors affecting gas pricesWhile supply and demand are the leading factors that dictate oil and gas prices, they aren’t the only players. CNN —In America, “Ford truck” usually means the F-series, the best-selling truck here for decades. But in many parts of the world, it probably means the Ford Ranger. In terms of size and capabilities, it fits between the big F-150 and the small, car-like Ford Maverick. The Ranger Raptor, which will have big 33-inch diameter tires, is designed for high-speed off-road driving. The previous generation Ford Ranger was available in other markets for many years before Ford finally decided to sell it in North America.

SMALL WONDER The 2023 Ford Maverick Lariat Tremor is a trail-capable version of the company’s compact pickup, with a sophisticated AWD system, a torque-vectoring rear differential and 30-inch all-terrain tires. THE FEW DAYS I spent in the company of Ford ’s new Maverick Lariat Tremor compact pickup ($37,465, as tested) left me with questions. Are those “Tremor” graphics on the bedsides an optional delete, I wondered? Second, with respect, why the hell aren’t more of your pickups like the Maverick—affordable, approachable, applicable, and that’s just the As? The Maverick with the Tremor package is a little knucklehead, a daily delight, as perky and over-performing as a Jack Russell Terrier that got into the freeze-dried coffee.

CNN —The Ford F-150 Lightning was named MotorTrend’s 2023 Truck of the Year on Tuesday, making it the second electric pickup in a row to win that award. MotorTrend’s panel of judges lauded the F-150 Lightning as “the best-riding, best-handling, and best-driving F-150 yet.” Unlike other versions of the F-150, the Lightning has independent rear suspension instead of a solid axle connecting the back wheels. It’s also another sign that electric power is making its mark among America’s most popular type of vehicle. The Ford F-150 Lightning has a large storage area under the hood instead of a gas engine. The F-150 Lightning was a unanimous winner among the MotorTrend’s seven jurists.
New York CNN Business —Ford saw its October US sales slump 10% over the last year as the company continued to battle supply chain difficulties. Ford sold 158,327 vehicles last month, down from almost 176,000 vehicles in the same period last year, the company said Wednesday. Not all automakers saw sales declines, however. Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia reported strong sales for the third month in a row, and Japanese automaker Toyota saw year-over-year sales rise 28% in October. Issues getting cars delivered to customers aside, “Ford continues to see strong demand for its vehicles,” Ford’s vice president in charge of sales for gasoline-fueled vehicles, Andrew Frick, said in a statement.
